Bharatanatyam Costume Designs

Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian dance form known for its intricate movements and expressive storytelling. Traditional Bharatanatyam costumes are rich in cultural symbolism and have specific design elements. Here are some key features and designs to consider when creating or selecting a Bharatanatyam costume:

1. Saree

The main component of a Bharatanatyam costume is the saree, typically worn in vibrant colors like red, green, or blue. The saree is draped in a specific style that allows freedom of movement while highlighting the dancer's footwork.

2. Pleats

The saree is usually draped with multiple pleats at the front, which helps accentuate the dancer's leg movements and adds elegance to the overall look.

3. Blouse

The blouse worn with the saree is typically short-sleeved and fitted, often embellished with intricate embroidery or beadwork. The color of the blouse should complement the saree.

4. Jewelry

Bharatanatyam costumes are adorned with various pieces of jewelry, including:

   - Temple Jewelry: These ornate gold or gold-plated jewelry pieces feature intricate designs and are traditionally worn by Bharatanatyam dancers. They include a choker necklace, long necklaces, earrings, bangles (kadas), armlets, waist belts, and anklets.

   - Hair Accessories: Bharatanatyam dancers wear decorative hair accessories such as flowers, bun covers, or metal accessories called "jada" that hang from the hair bun.

5. Makeup

Bharatanatyam makeup is typically bold and dramatic to enhance facial expressions during performances. It involves darkened eyebrows, emphasized eyes using black eyeliner and eyeshadow, red or maroon lipstick, and a bindi on the forehead.

6. Odissi Influence

In some variations of Bharatanatyam costumes, you may find influences from the Odissi dance form, which includes additional elements like a waistband (mekhala), a long scarf (dupatta), and decorative ornaments called "gulbandh" worn on the upper arms.

When choosing or designing a Bharatanatyam costume, it's important to consult with a professional costume designer who can ensure authenticity and appropriate fit. Additionally, regional variations in costume designs may exist, so it's worth considering the specific style and tradition you are following.
